Care Ministry

Pastoral Counseling

Pastoral Counseling typically involves a defined focus on a life challenge, such as a relationship difficulty or a behavior where change is desired. Scripture, prayer in various forms, anointing with oil, and theological reflection as well as a recognition that our worshiping church family is a resource for healing, are usually included at some point. We are blessed to have an outstanding team of Christian counselors here on our campus at the Baton Rouge Christian Counseling Center, but there are other resources nearby. If more extensive counseling work is needed, referral to these licensed therapists is a typical next step, but counsel with a pastor is often an excellent beginning. Please contact Laura Shaw or Scott Graham if you’d like to schedule a meeting.

Spiritual Direction

Spiritual Direction is an opportunity for intentional, set-apart, prayerful presence, usually in a one-on-one setting, where the director creates and holds open space for the directee to notice God’s presence and the guidance of the Holy Spirit in a more attentive and developed way. The goal is to shape the directee into fuller life in Jesus Christ. Meeting with a director can be helpful if one is facing a new "chapter" in life, such as an empty nest, a change in jobs or retirement, or a reevaluation of life due to a dramatic life event or "tug" from God through a sermon or prayer time. We currently have two licensed spiritual directors, and Scott Graham's doctoral work is in Pastoral Theology in Practice, which focuses on counseling and spiritual direction. Please contact Laura Shaw if you are interested in scheduling a meeting with a Scott or a spiritual director.

GriefShare Ministry

The death of a loved one is one of the greatest challenges we face in life. GriefShare is a Christian program that has been used in thousands of churches over the past 25 years to bring expert counsel, alongside the love and gifts of God’s people, to provide healing and help in the midst of loss. Groups meet weekly for 13 sessions, which include well presented 30 minute videos touching on topics such as difficult emotions, loneliness, questions for God and moving forward while remembering loved ones, coupled with discussion, prayer, and support from others. Please contact Laura Shaw or Scott Graham if you are interested in participating.

Deep Healing Prayer

There are times when a trauma or painful experience from our past leaves us with fear, depression, bitterness, or dis-ease in our spiritual lives. Deep healing prayer provides an opportunity for the Lord to bring comfort or reveal unresolved spiritual issues in the context of a safe, confidential environment. Please contact Laura Shaw or Scott Graham if you are interested in learning more or setting up an appointment.

Homebound Communion

When you can’t come to church, we can come to you. Are you or someone you know in need of having communion served at home? We have ruling and/or teaching elders, sometimes accompanied by our deacons, who will bring communion. Please contact Laura Shaw if you would like to be put on our list.

Bereavement Ministry

The Bereavement Team serves as hosts to families during funeral services held at FPC, warmly welcoming and providing refreshments for those gathering during the visitation period. For more information about how to become a member of the Bereavement Team, please Becky Phillips.

Meal Ministry

We frequently support others experiencing a trial by providing food. Are you interested in providing meals for those in special circumstances? If so, please contact Emily Viguerie.
